Controversy over ‘sale’ of Speaker’s residence

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Lands Commission has rebutted claims that there were attempts to sell the official residence of the Speaker of Parliament to a private developer.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin had claimed at a recent forum that his official residence had unbeknown to him been sold to a private developer, and that only came to light when the developer was on the verge of registering the land at the Lands Commission.
But the Commission in a statement issued to the press dismissed those claims as false insisting that rather, there has been a process to regularize the occupation of the said land by the Parliamentary Service.
The statement said on 22nd December 2022, the Regional Lands Commission approved the application of the Parliamentary Service made on 15th November 2022.
The statement added that on 14th February, 2023, the Commission made an offer of allocation to the Parliamentary Service which was accepted by the Service on 28th April 2023.
Neither the Parliamentary Service nor the Speaker of Parliament is yet to respond to the Commission’s response.
