I could not betray Ken, he gave me money to revive my business – Afenyo Markin

Majority Leader in Parliament, Afenyo Markin says it would have been an act of betrayal on his part if had campaigned against Kennedy Agyapong in last year’s NPP Presidential Primary.

Recounting events around that period in an interview with Citi TV’s Bernard Avle, the MP for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region said, the NPP Presidential Primary presented a very difficult moment for him.

“This is a bosom friend. At a time that I was going to through crisis in Parliament; that positions had been shared and nobody considered Afenyo Markin, he calls me midnight into his house, we talk business and he says, Alex, I want to give you capital to revive your business. He gives me capital to revive my business and I turn round to betray him? No! I can’t do that,” Mr Afenyo Markin stated.

“You see, Ken and I were all (supporting) Bawumia and out of the blue he informed me that Alex I want to contest. I said okay but as it is I am Freemason and a Catholic; I know how to respect friendship and if you have given your word to a brother you have to keep it. So I told him that our friendship would remain but it would be difficult for me to be seen to be out there doing this and that however I would want to play that role of resolving issues and being the bridge.

He said both Dr. Bawumia and Ken Agyapong understood the difficult position he found himself in stressing that he was very open with both candidates.

“I am an open-minded person. I told Dr Bawumia what the situation was, I told Ken what the situation was I told Mr President what the situation was. Senior members of the party knew the situation I found myself in,” he stated.
