I am sorry – Napo issues apology
NPP running mate in the upcoming presidential elections, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly referred to as Napo, has issued an apology following controversial comparison of the leadership impact of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and President Akufo Addo.
Napo has come under intense criticism following the comments made during his unveiling as running mate at the Kumasi Jubilee Park.
The former Energy Minister had defended his statements when he visited Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Omanhene of Wasa Amenfi Traditional Area at Wassa Akropong. “In Ghanaian politics, If you say the truth they say you are disrespectful, but they clap for you when you lie,” he stated during his visit.
But in a statement released, Napo said: “I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor”.
He added that the statement he made reflected his personal opinion on the impact of Akufo Addo on the development of the country relative to other leaders.
“I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” the statement said.
