We lost 5 laptops but elections will still be credible – EC Boss

Jean Mensa, EC Boss

The Electoral Commission says five laptops had been stolen from their offices but has indicated that it would not affect the credibility of the 2024 polls.

EC Chair Person, Jean Mensa, told Parliament that the loss will have no impact on  voter registration or the credibility of the voters’ register.

She explained that the stolen laptops required “certain security processes that a BVD or a BVR has to go through to be connected to our systems. And so on its own, it cannot be used to register anybody”.

The EC boss said the Commission was committed to protecting the country’s democracy through a transparent and credible electoral process.

“From the registration to the declaration, our processes are embedded with one key ingredient, and that is transparency, transparency, transparency. As such we will continue to operate in the spirit of transparency, fairness and integrity as embedded in our motto,” she declared.

There have been concerns, particularly, from the Opposition NDC about the preparedness of the EC and its commitment to provide a level playing field for all political parties.

But EC Chair Person dismissed those concerns and assured MPs that EC had instituted measures to ensure that the elections were credible and transparent.
