Bloody hands: Top pastor slams parties for electoral violence
Former General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev Opuni-Frimpong, has criticised political parties for electoral related violence leading to the death of some Ghanaians
Speaking on Accra based Citi FM, Rev Opuni-Frimpong said the failure to prosecute such violence was an indictment on the electoral process and continues to fester a culture of political violence.
“Sometimes you ask yourself, why are our leaders not worried about these electoral violence and electoral deaths? Our hands are so bloody and we must be worried as a country,” he cautioned.
He added that electoral related violence predated the 2020 Elections which claimed eight lives and wondered why there have not been any prosecutions to date.
“We must find those people who killed the eight people and prosecute them, and if need be, even find compensation for those they have left behind,” he counseled.
According to hm, the government and the police should show commitment to fight this canker and demonstrate some commitment in investing these deaths and punishing the perpetrators.
“For me, going into the 2024 election, if the government and the Ghana Police Service can give Ghanaians evidence that at least even if we have not come to completion of investigations, the process is ongoing and we know those people we are prosecuting, they will add to the peace process,” he stated.
