President John Dramani Mahama

His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama has promised to end the conflict in Bawku, calling it one of his priorities as president.

Addressing the chiefs and people of the Kusaug Traditional Area at  Bawku Naba Palace on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Mahama assured residents of his administration’s determination to restore peace and stability to the conflict-affected region.

“During the campaign, I said that if I became president, bringing peace to Bawku would be one of my top priorities,” he stated.

Acknowledging the fear and struggles residents have endured, President Mahama promised to revive the peace that existed during his earlier time in office.

“We are working hard to restore peace in Bawku,” he added, encouraging residents to remain hopeful.

As part of his efforts, President John Mahama announced plans to make key security appointments by the end of the week. He described the appointments as a critical first step in addressing the conflict.

“These appointments will include the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Interior, the National Security Co-ordinator, the National Security Advisor, and the BNI Director. I will charge them to make Bawku one of their major priorities,” President Mahama stated.

He commended the security services for their role in maintaining peace during the recent elections, highlighting the need for vigilance against internal threats such as chieftaincy disputes and armed robberies, as well as external threats at the northern borders.

“We still have threats to our peace that we must continue to look at internally and externally. Internally to do with chieftaincy disputes and some incidents of armed robbery. Externally to do with the threats on our northern borders and so we cannot let our vigilance down,” He mentioned.

President Mahama expressed confidence that the new security measures would help reduce tensions and promote harmony in Bawku and surrounding areas.
