OSP challenges “purported medical letter” of suspect Ken Ofori Atta

Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has raised concerns over a medical letter purportedly excusing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from appearing for questioning as a suspect in four major corruption investigations, including the National Cathedral project.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng clarified the OSP’s position on the letter, describing it as “It is a purported medical letter’’.
He further criticized the letter, describing it as inadequate to justify Ofori-Atta’s absence from the investigation.

“We can all say that I am not well and I can’t come to work today. No serious law enforcement agency will accept that kind of letter’’he stated.

OSP Agyebeng further alleged that the letter was “a ruse intended for him not to show up in the jurisdiction willingly,” necessitating the OSP’s press briefing.
He also emphasized the OSP’s reliance on credible evidence and careful investigative processes which he did not disclose for fear that it will compromise the investigations.
“We have done our checks,” “I only pursue cases with a 90/10 probability that some criminality has ensued.” stated.

“There is some bit of intelligence available to us for which we do not want to reveal now as we fear it can compromise our investigations. If we think we should reveal it at some future point, we will.” He added.

Addressing a question on the timing of the investigations, The Special Prosecutor stressed that the investigations will have still taken place even if Ken Offi Atta’s government was in Office
“This is not a one-off case. If his government was still in power, we would have still gone after him. We have a history of that.” He emphasized

In addition to addressing the letter, Agyebeng refuted reports that OSP officials raided Ofori-Atta’s residence on February 11, describing the event as “a staged act” by the former minister to mislead the public and undermine the investigation.

The OSP has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and due process, while urging full cooperation from the former finance minister.
