Gov’t to abolish E-Levy and Betting Tax but gives no timelines

Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, at today’s Budget Reading served notice that the NDC would abolish the Betting Tax and the E-Levy but gave no timelines for the abolition of the taxes.

The NDC Party had campaigned on the promise that it was going to abolish these taxes which the party described as obnoxious.

In Opposition, the NDC had vehemently opposed the E-Levy, describing it as a nuisance tax that should be abolished.

However, the party seems to be overwhelmed by the current economic challenges and many have expressed doubt about the ability of the NDC to make good its promise to Ghanaians.

The Minister also announced that the government would abolish the Emissions Tax and the Covid-19 levy.

Some economic and finance experts believe that the failure to provide a timeline is as a result of the challenges the government is facing and have indicated that an immediate abolition of the taxes with boosting other source of revenue may plunge the economy into crisis.
