Robert Prevost announced as Pope Leo XIV

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Robert Prevost, 69, has been announced as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American to hold the position.

His announcement was met with overwhelming cheers from the crowd of over 40,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

Addressing the faithful from the Vatican balcony, Pope Leo XIV said, “May peace be with all of you,”.

Born in Chicago, Prevost is recognized as a reformer within the Church. He spent decades as a missionary in Peru, where he later served as an archbishop before being elevated to his new role.

In his address, he honored his predecessor and spoke briefly in Spanish, expressing gratitude to his former diocese.

“Help us, and help each other, build bridges,” he urged, emphasizing the need for solidarity and understanding in today’s divided world.
