Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday, marking the club’s first European title in over four decades and earning a spot in next season’s Champions League.

This victory marks Tottenham’s first major trophy since they lifted the English League Cup in 2008 and their first European success since winning their second UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) in 1984.

Brennan Johnson was the man to watch after netting the decisive goal just before halftime, providing a much-needed boost for Spurs after a challenging season that sees the team finishing near the bottom of the Premier League table.

The win guarantees Tottenham a place in next season’s Champions League, a relief to manager Ange Postecoglou, who faced difficulties and countless criticisms on his team’s performance throughout the season.

The loss places additional pressure on United coach Ruben Amorim, whose squad currently sit 16th — just ahead of Tottenham in the Premier League, a position that will have the club miss out on any European competition next season.
The match was closely contested, with both teams struggling to create significant scoring chances until Tottenham broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute. Pape Sarr delivered a cross into the box that deflected off Shaw and landed in front of Brennan Johnson, who managed to poke it across the goal line.

United nearly equalized during the match when Rasmus Hojlund’s header was cleared off the goal line by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven in the 68th minute. In stoppage time, Luke Shaw’s header forced a challenging save from Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

After conceding, United pressed for an equalizer but failed to find the back of the net at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium, Spain.

Manchester United last celebrated a trophy win in the 2024 FA Cup, while their most recent European victory came in 2017 when they claimed the Europa League under manager Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils suffered defeats in all four encounters against Tottenham this season and have not won against their rivals in seven consecutive matches, with the last six under Postecoglou’s management.

Tottenham and United had previously faced each other in just one final, the 2009 League Cup where Alex Ferguson’s United triumphed 4-1 on penalties following a goalless draw.
