Gov’t settles GH¢603m NHIS debt – Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the government has fully settled arrears owed to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), totaling GH¢603 million as of December 2024.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, the minister said the payment marks a major milestone in the country’s healthcare financing efforts and underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector.
“This milestone demonstrates our commitment and the government’s steadfast dedication to timely payment and fulfilling our obligation in healthcare financing,” Mr. Akandoh stated.
He emphasised that no administration in the history of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has been as prompt in releasing funds from the consolidated fund to the National Health Insurance Fund.
“Let me put on record that in the history of NHIA, no government has paid or released money from the consolidated funds to the National Health Insurance Fund more promptly than this government. We are doing it on a monthly basis,” he added.
Highlighting recent progress, the Minister revealed that in the first half of 2025 alone, the NHIA disbursed over GH¢1.38 billion to healthcare providers—an indication of a more efficient and responsive system.
