Nigerian pirates fingered as 71 fishermen rescued

The government has alerted international security agencies to look out for suspected Nigerian pirates who robbed Ghanaian fishermen, sources in government have disclosed.

Fishermen rescued by the Ghana Armed Forces indicated that the suspects’ accents strongly suggested they may be Nigerians.

Deputy Defence Minister, Yaw Brogya Gyamfi, has confirmed that all 71 Ghanaian fishermen affected by the recent armed attack near Senya Bereku have been successfully rescued.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, he said the fishermen were found unharmed and that none was held hostage during the incident.

According to him, the attackers were primarily interested in stealing outboard motors, leaving the fishermen stranded at sea after disabling their canoes.

Mr. Gyamfi commended the local Member of Parliament and community members for their strong coordination and support to the Ghana Navy during the rescue efforts.

He added that surveillance operations are still ongoing, with both the Eastern and Western Naval Commands actively pursuing the suspects behind the robbery.

The attack occurred during a night fishing expedition on February 25 in the waters off the Awutu Senya District, where armed men reportedly fired warning shots and made away with outboard motors and other valuables.
