Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally acknowledged the electoral victory of former President John Dramani Mahama in Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
In a statement delivered on Sunday, December 8, Dr. Bawumia announced that he had personally called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on becoming the President-elect of the Republic of Ghana.
“I have just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as the President-elect,” Dr. Bawumia revealed. He further emphasized that his decision reflects his unwavering commitment to ensuring peace and unity in the country, reiterating sentiments he expressed during the recent signing of a peace accord before the elections.
Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), acknowledged that the outcome of the polls signifies the people’s desire for change. “The people of Ghana have voted for change, and I respect the will of the people,” he stated, adding that his concession is a step toward maintaining the nation’s democratic principles and social harmony.
Preliminary results from constituencies across the country indicate a significant lead for Mr. Mahama, with projections suggesting a sweeping victory in both the presidential and parliamentary races. Although the Electoral Commission has yet to release an official declaration, Dr. Bawumia’s gesture is seen as a crucial move to de-escalate potential tensions.
In his address, the Vice President also appealed to his supporters to remain calm and prioritize the nation’s unity. “I urge all NPP supporters to remain peaceful and supportive as we transition to new leadership. Ghana’s democratic stability is paramount, and we must honor the principles that guide our nation,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia’s concession is viewed as a testament to Ghana’s reputation for peaceful elections and a commitment to preserving its democratic legacy.
This pivotal development paves the way for Mr. Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to assume leadership as Ghanaians look forward to a new administration
