Ghana pip Madagascar in World Cup thriller

Inaki Williams scored his debut goal for the Black Stars

Ghana’s Black Stars beat Madagascar’s national team by a lone goal in a World Cup Qualifier played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium yesterday.

The Black Stars endured a cagey first half during which the Madagascans could have snatched the lead. Captained by returning goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, the Black Stars had nervy moments as their opponents’ counter offensive play posed serious problems for a midfield and defence missing experienced stars such as Thomas Partey and Salisu Mohammed.

Upfront, Jordan Ayew and Inaki Williams proved their mettle but were frustrated by a resilient defensive game by their opponents.

In the second half, Head Coach Chris Hutton ringed some changes and the mercurial midfielder, Ashimeru who replaced Baba Iddrisu was a delight to watch in the midfield.

Yet, the game appeared tricky for both sides and the Malagasies proved some anxious moments for the stars including a near miss as the ball hit the post with goalkeeper, Richard rooted on his spot.

Five minutes of added almost petered out with no goal until an offensive play found young sensation, Ernest Nuamah who hobbled the ball tenaciously linking up with a teammate and a resultant cross from Gideon Mensah was met by a powerful header just on the nick of the 60th second of the 5th minute of added time sending the Baba Yara Stadium into wild jubilations.
