Between the Attorney General and OSP (1)

The rift between the Attorney General and the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng is facing a new twist following some reports about the business activities of a businessman – Dr Sledge – a friend and financier of Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Earlier this year, MP for Gomoa Central had accused the Attorney General of thievery and corruption and taking money from Dr. Sledge, also known as Nana Yaw Duodum, for campaign; attacks the legislator later retracted and apologised for.

Weeks after the wild attacks by the Gomoa Central MP, Dr Sledge who is also the CEO of Goldbridge Refinery Limited was indicted by the Special Prosecutor for alleged corrupt deals worth about 94m USD in respect of the Mineral Income Investment Fund’s Gold for Forex and Gold for Oil programmes.

There are speculations that the move by the OSP touched a raw nerve of the Attorney General, Dr. Ayine who has already exposed his association with Dr Sledge.  And that explains the recent accusations against him on the issue of the delayed docket on the Ken Ofori-Atta matter.

In debunking the allegations of thievery and corruption, the Attorney General indirectly conceded that he might have received some campaign support from Dr. Sledge, yet that did not make him a thief or a corrupt person.

“If receiving donations or a pickup for your campaign is corruption, then there are 276 thieves in Parliament, including the person making the allegation,” the Attorney General has stated in reply to the accusations.

But while the AG may appear unmoved by those allegations against his campaign financier, Dr. Sledge, he may be expectedly uncomfortable with the allegations based on the financial support he received from Dr. Sledge for his campaign.

Directly blaming the recent rift between the AG and the Special Prosecutor over the extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta may be unfairly speculative. However, these suspicions may linger in many minds, and if the two cases are not credibly dealt with in a just and transparent manner, they could raise serious questions about the administration of justice in the country.

The AG and the Special Prosecutor must handle these issues with utmost tact and professionalism, else they may return one day to haunt them.
